Wessex Annual General Meeting Update

Attendance of this year’s Wessex Annual General Meeting was up over last year. A Whopping 13 members attended. This is higher than usual, so we thank all those who attended.
The Committee remained the same, apart from the addition of Chris Palmer, who has volunteered to help out as deputy Treasurer.
As you may (or may not!) know, the Wessex is run 100% by volunteers. So the more help the members can give in running the Wessex the better we can make our club.
Wessex Team Squash
Wessex will be running three teams in the Wiltshire leagues (Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3). Also a fourth team in the Gloucester leagues.
A number of emails have already been sent out, but you can join in with team squash at any point during the season.
Information regarding fixtures and match results can be found at:
Your team captains are:
Wessex 1: John Walker Wessex 2: Neil Harries
Wessex 3: Martin Hill Wessex A: Neil Marshman
Please contact Dean Watkins or email the club
Defence Academy Team Squash
During the recent months, Swindon has seen a number of facilities close. Due to a re-shuffle within the organisation of the Defence Academy Squash Club by the Military, the courts at the Defence Academy are temporarily unavailable for use by the civilian members.
This club hosts a large number of players and also runs a number teams in the Oxfordshire leagues and one team in the Wiltshire leagues
In the short term, while the club re-establishes itself. The Wessex has offered to host two of the Defence Academy teams at the Wessex.
This does seem a little strange! But it is with an aim to maintain the player base and players within Wiltshire squash. Our sport desperately needs players, so anything we can do to help during this period is for the good of the sport in our area.
So if you do spot some different faces around the club on a Monday or Thursday evening, please welcome them to our club.
Wiltshire Doubles
Wiltshire Double tournament was won by Josh Watkins and Calli Smith.
Excellent win to upset the established order of things. Good to see the younger players starting to become a force to be reckoned with.
Gavin Roberts Memorial Handicap
Well Done to Chloe Marshman, who emerged victorious from a very competitive tournament. There were many upsets along the way, as is expected with a brutal handicapping system. Some players needing 3 points to win against an opponent requiring 30+ points to win.

Beginners Squash Lessons – Sundays @ 6pm
These sessions are aimed at players who haven’t had any coaching, who are keen to learn the basic skills, but are new to the sport. We recognise that it is sometimes difficult to decide whether a sport is your thing, without first giving the sport a try. But without any tuition a new sport can be challenging to play.
The sessions, which are open to members and non-members, will comprise of a small group of no more than 8 players. The lessons will be held over 8 weeks, providing 6 lessons and 2 “supervised game” sessions. The cost will be £40, which is only £5 a lesson and excellent value
The sessions will be led by Dean Watkins/Neil Marshman and will cover basic technique and strategy.
The aim of the sessions is to introduce you into the sport. If you like it then this can lead on to playing in the internal leagues etc. If you are keen to develop your game beyond the basics, then there are further coaching opportunities available through our resident coach, Paul Bennett.

Wessex will supply ball and rackets. Participants will need to bring their own non-marking sports shoes.
Please spread the news!
Team Handicap Tournament
This will not be your ordinary handicap tournament! This will be a Frantic Squash tournament! Frantic squash is a team game based on five-minute matches where each player’s goal is to win as many points as possible for their team.
You enter by letting us know via
The teams are selected from the pool of players who have entered. Teams of 3-4 players will be created of mixed ability. These teams then play off against each other, with players of similar standard going head to head.
That’s the theory!
Dates to be announced
Further Court Renovations

We think that all would agree that the result of the renovation of court 3 are fantastic.
We are aware that this court does get colder than the other courts due to having an external wall. To try to maintain this court as one of the best assets of the Wessex we will be adding court heaters to boost the comfort of playing on this court over the winter period.

Dates For Your Diary
Wiltshire Seniors (Closed), Friday 19th January to Sunday 21st January at the Wessex Squash Club.
This is an excellent chance to see the best our county has to offer duke it out. You can enter, it is open to all standards. Or why not come down and support Wiltshire Squash and the Wessex
